Tokyo: Japan Implements Disaster-Ready Vending Machines to Aid in Emergencies.
Media reports indicate that Japan has taken proactive measures by extending its disaster preparedness efforts to include vending machines. These machines have been strategically placed to offer free food and beverages during earthquakes or storms.
As a pilot initiative, two of these specialized vending machines have been installed in Akko, a city situated on Japan’s west coast. This region has been identified by experts as prone to potential severe earthquakes in the coming years.
The vending machines have a considerable capacity, capable of holding up to 300 bottles and small cans, along with 150 emergency food items. They have been strategically placed near buildings designated as shelters during natural disasters.
To ensure their effectiveness during critical situations, these vending machines are designed with a unique mechanism. In the event of heavy rainfall or a powerful earthquake, they will automatically unlock and dispense food items free of charge. However, during normal times, payment is required to obtain items from these machines.
