Lahore: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a relief package for the low-income sector in Pakistan, providing a subsidy of Rs50 per litre on petroleum.

The announcement was made after a review meeting chaired by the premier in Punjab’s capital. The subsidy will be available to low-income consumers with motorcycles, rickshaws, 800cc cars, and other small cars.

The programme will be initiated soon, and a comprehensive strategy will be formed in collaboration with relevant departments for effective implementation.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Musadik Malik, briefed the meeting about the strategy for providing petroleum subsidies to the low-income segment of society.

Despite economic difficulties, the government is making every possible effort to help poor people, the premier said. Last week, the federal government raised petrol prices by Rs5 per litre due to the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar and an increase in prices registered by Platts Singapore.

The new prices came into effect on March 16 and will remain in place until March 31.
