Google Translate, a tool that has assisted millions in communication, has unveiled a new update. Google announced that it is adding support for 110 new languages to Google Translate.

Previously, Google Translate supported 133 languages, so this expansion marks a significant jump. Alphabet Inc. claims that this is the company’s largest expansion ever.

Google’s PaLM 2 AI language model assisted Translate in learning these new languages. It was particularly effective at learning related languages, such as those “close to Hindi, like Awadhi and Marwadi, and French creoles like Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole,” according to tech media report.

Here are some of the new languages now supported by Google Translate:

  • Tok Pisin
  • Afar
  • Punjabi
  • Cantonese
  • Manx
  • NKo
  • Tamazight
  • Balochi

The list of newly supported languages in Google Translate includes Cantonese, which “has long been one of the most requested languages for Google Translate,” the report says.

“Because Cantonese often overlaps with Mandarin in writing, it is tricky to find data and train models.” Tech media reports also state that “about a quarter of the new languages come from Africa.”
