LAHORE: Uber announced on Tuesday its decision to discontinue its ride-hailing app in Pakistan.
“We’ve decided to cease operating the Uber app in Pakistan,” a spokesperson for Uber informed Dawn.com.
“Our subsidiary, Careem, will remain operational, providing ride-hailing services across Pakistan and opportunities for drivers,” the spokesperson added.
Uber had acquired its competitor, Careem, for $3.1 billion in 2019, with both companies committing to maintain their regional services and individual brands.
In October 2022, Uber stopped its operations in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad. It opted to serve these cities through Careem, while maintaining operations via the Uber app solely in Lahore.
In an email sent to Lahore users today, Uber stated its “difficult decision to discontinue Uber app services in Lahore effective April 30”.
“Ride-hailing services will continue through our subsidiary, Careem. You can seamlessly sign up and request rides through Careem,” the email read.
“In response, Careem Rides may reach out for registration. Please complete the provided form by May 3, 2024, if you prefer not to share your details with Careem.
“If you have an Uber Cash balance in your Uber Wallet, we will provide instructions on reclaiming it in due course,” it added, offering users a 50% discount on five rides with Careem.
Lahore users attempting to access the app were greeted with the message: “Uber no longer in Lahore.” They were also informed of the option to utilize Careem, along with a 50% discount on five rides using code LHR50.
