ISLAMABAD: Dismissing speculations, former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will vehemently oppose any attempts to delay the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.
As the President of PML-N, Shehbaz emphasized in a recent interview with a private TV channel that the nation must enter the election phase without further delay, emphasizing that any postponement would be detrimental to both Pakistan and its democratic process.
He expressed the opinion that despite challenges, the nationwide polls should proceed as planned, pointing out that all political parties have initiated election campaigns across the country.
Highlighting the accomplishments of past governments, particularly those led by his elder brother, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz credited Nawaz with making Pakistan a nuclear power.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a 13-party alliance aimed at challenging the Imran Khan-led government, Shehbaz credited the coalition for averting a financial crisis during its 16-month rule.
Discussing the party’s election strategy, Shehbaz revealed that Nawaz personally interviewed candidates and confirmed that Nawaz would be the PML-N’s candidate for the premiership.
However, he declined to confirm the restoration of his previous role as Punjab Chief Minister, stating that the decision would be made in consultation with Nawaz after winning the mandate.
Addressing the party’s slogan “Vote Ko Izzat Do” (Respect the Vote), Shehbaz clarified that it aimed to end loadshedding in five years.
Commenting on various legal cases against the PML-N and its leadership, Shehbaz claimed that Imran Khan would not be facing imprisonment if the events of May 9 had not occurred, which he labeled as a “betrayal” and a “conspiracy” against the armed forces by the PTI founder.
He urged all stakeholders to maintain unity for the greater good of the country. Recently, Shehbaz expressed confidence that the PML-N would surprise everyone in the February 8 elections, with the party aiming to secure enough seats for his brother Nawaz to become the prime minister for a record fourth time.
With Nawaz’s return to Pakistan after nearly four years of exile, the PML-N believes it has gained a significant boost ahead of the elections, having fielded candidates for a substantial number of seats across the country.
