India Releases Water into Sutlej River, Prompting High Alert by PDMA

India has released water into the Sutlej River following the earlier water release in the Ravi River, resulting in the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issuing a high alert.

According to the PDMA, India has released a substantial amount of 95,000 cusecs of water from Harike into the Sutlej River. This water is anticipated to enter Pakistan at Ganda Singh Kasur and maintain its flow for approximately 12 hours.

Consequently, both the Ravi and Sutlej Rivers have experienced a rise in water levels, with an observed increase in water flow specifically at the Jaskarke point along the Ravi River.

Precautionary Measures Implemented with Relief Camps and Advance Arrangements

To mitigate potential floods, precautionary measures have been put in place, including the establishment of relief camps across various districts. The PDMA has issued instructions to the Deputy Commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, and Wahari to ensure complete advance arrangements. Additionally, the emergency control room staff has been directed to maintain a high state of readiness, while all relevant departments have been urged to promptly communicate the latest developments to the authorities.

Disaster Response Team on High Alert and Adequate Resources Ensured

In response to the situation, the disaster response team of Rescue 1122 has been placed on high alert to swiftly address any potential emergencies. Furthermore, an ample supply of petrol and diesel has been secured to support the rescue operations. Ensuring the availability of abundant medicines in medical facilities is another priority, along with making adequate arrangements for space and food to accommodate animals during this critical time.

Successful Rescue of Individuals Engaged in Paddy Cultivation

In a recent positive development, a total of 327 individuals engaged in paddy cultivation, including 27 farmers who were stranded across the Ravi River, have been successfully rescued in the region of Kartarpur.

Reassurance from Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab

Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, has provided reassurance to the public, stating that the overflow of the Ravi River is under close monitoring. At present, there is no immediate danger posed by the rising water levels, assuaging concerns among the local population.
