WASHINGTON: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has praised the leadership of India and Pakistan for agreeing to stop recent hostilities, calling their move “historic and heroic.”

In a statement posted on Truth Social and X, Trump said both nations showed wisdom and courage by ending the recent aggression, which he warned could have led to massive destruction and loss of innocent lives.

“I am very proud of the strong leadership shown by both India and Pakistan. You have made a brave decision to end the current aggression, which could have caused the death of millions of innocent people,” he said.

Trump added that the United States played a helpful role in bringing the two sides to this agreement. “The USA is proud to have helped in reaching this important decision,” he said.

He also announced plans to increase trade significantly with both India and Pakistan, calling them “great nations.”

Trump further stated he would work with both countries to seek a peaceful solution to the long-standing Kashmir dispute, saying: “Even if it takes a thousand years, we should try to solve Kashmir.”

The ceasefire, brokered through international diplomatic efforts led by the United States, was announced after extensive talks involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, who engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Both nations agreed to halt military actions by land, air, and sea, with plans for their military operations directors to resume discussions on May 12.
