ISLAMABAD: Due to more terror activities happening in Pakistan, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has agreed to set up the National Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Centre (NIFTAC) under the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta).

This decision was made during the fifth meeting of the Nacta Board of Governors in Islamabad. The meeting included important choices to improve Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has seen more terrorist attacks, especially on police and security forces, in areas near the border like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In January 2025, terror attacks in Pakistan went up by 42% compared to the month before, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a research group.

At the meeting today, Nacta’s National Coordinator, Dr Khalid Chauhan, told everyone about the authority’s work so far and its plans for the future.

A key decision from the meeting was the approval to create the National Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Center (NIFTAC). This new center, planned after talks with security experts, will be a special place to organize intelligence and study threats.

During the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi said that starting NIFTAC is an important move to help Nacta reach its goals.

He also said that similar centers, called PIFTACs, will be made in all provincial capitals to support intelligence work in those areas.

NIFTAC is expected to help carry out the National Action Plan (NAP) properly and deal with new security problems. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said that NIFTAC will make Nacta stronger and better at fighting terrorism.

The meeting had Senators Manzoor Ahmed and Ponjo Mal Bheel, the Interior Secretary, the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, and Home Secretaries from all provinces present. The Inspector Generals of Police from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan were also there.

All the suggestions from Dr Khalid Chauhan were fully agreed upon by the Board of Governors. These decisions are expected to improve Pakistan’s internal security and help its fight against terrorism.
