Ex-foreign secretary Najmuddin Shaikh dies in Karachi

KARACHI: Former foreign secretary Najmuddin A. Shaikh passed away early Friday morning in Karachi, private media reported, citing his family.

They said he passed away peacefully at home and asked people to pray for him. His funeral will take place on March 28 after the afternoon prayers at a graveyard in Karachi.

Shaikh leaves behind his wife, Raana, his two kids, Nadir and Nermeen, his daughter-in-law, Sobia, and two grandchildren, Isaad and Lyali. He also has four brothers, two sisters, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In his career, Shaikh worked as Pakistan’s top diplomat in Canada, Germany, the United States, and Iran. He was also part of a strategy group in Islamabad and helped start a foreign relations council in Karachi.

Khurram Dastgir Khan, a former foreign minister, said he was sorry to hear about Shaikh’s death. In a message online, he said Shaikh was one of the few diplomats who really understood the world and could explain global events well.
