ISLAMABAD: New gas and oil reserves have been found in the Waziristan Block of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). This discovery is an important step in finding natural resources locally.
According to a media report, the Spinwam-1 well produced 12.96 million cubic feet of gas and 20 barrels of crude oil, the drilling of the well started on May 28, 2024, and the discovery in the Waziristan Block was made by Mari Energies.
Mari Energies said it is working as the operator company in the Waziristan Block and owns 55 percent of the shares. The joint venture also includes OGDCL (Oil and Gas Development Company Limited) and OPI.
This discovery follows earlier progress in Pakistan’s energy sector. In December 2024, OGDCL began gas production from newly-discovered reserves in the Uch Sharif area of Dera Bugti, Balochistan. That project was supported by the State Investment and Finance Corporation (SIFC).

A private TV channel reported that the collaboration led to the discovery of gas reserves with a production capacity of 5 million standard cubic feet per day after drilling a well to a depth of 1,345 meters.
The gas is now sent to Uch Power Limited through OGDCL’s Uch Gas Processing Plant, with expected earnings of up to Rs41.02 billion. OGDCL also mentioned its earlier find of gas reserves in Khairpur, Sindh, showing its continued work to improve energy supply.
Mari Energies stated that the Waziristan discovery will help increase the country’s hydrocarbon resources. The company added that it is committed to searching for and finding new resources. It also thanked the national security agencies, federal government, and provincial government for their support.
These recent findings, including the earlier OGDCL success in Balochistan, highlight ongoing efforts by companies like Mari Energies and OGDCL to boost Pakistan’s energy supply and support national development.
