KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly has approved the Universities Amendment Bill regarding appointments in universities. With the amendments, bureaucrats can now be appointed as Vice Chancellors (VCs).
As per the private tv channel report, the bill removes the requirement for a PhD degree for the VC position. A person with a Master’s degree can now also be appointed as a VC.
MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the bill in the assembly. Earlier, the opposition’s amendments were rejected in the standing committee.
It is worth noting that teaching activities have been suspended in 17 universities across Sindh due to these amendments. Teachers have expressed their concerns, saying they do not accept the idea of appointing bureaucrats as VCs.
