Bureaucrats now eligible for vice chancellor positions, Sindh assembly passes amendment bill

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly has approved the Universities Amendment Bill regarding appointments in universities. With the amendments, bureaucrats can now be appointed as Vice Chancellors (VCs).

As per the private tv channel report, the bill removes the requirement for a PhD degree for the VC position. A person with a Master’s degree can now also be appointed as a VC.

MQM and Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the bill in the assembly. Earlier, the opposition’s amendments were rejected in the standing committee.

It is worth noting that teaching activities have been suspended in 17 universities across Sindh due to these amendments. Teachers have expressed their concerns, saying they do not accept the idea of appointing bureaucrats as VCs.

On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah recently said that many VCs lack administrative experience and are ruining universities.

He added that the federal HEC is influencing Sindh’s universities, he emphasized that the government knows how to implement its decisions and will follow the criteria set by the assembly.

In an other news, the Sindh government has completed preparations to take over the management of the Green Line and Orange Line bus services in February 2025.

A high-level meeting was held to review the transfer process. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon chaired the meeting.

The meeting discussed the transfer of the Green Line service from the federal government and the Orange Line service’s operations to the Sindh government.
