ISLAMABAD: Reportedly disillusioned with his party’s leadership, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a senior figure in the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has officially declared his decision not to participate in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.

Abbasi had resigned from his party position shortly following Maryam Nawaz’s appointment as senior vice president and chief organizer. Despite rumors suggesting internal disagreements within the party leadership, Abbasi clarified that his resignation from the role of senior vice president was intended to afford Maryam a more unhindered opportunity.

In an interview with a private media outlet, Abbasi explained, “I am abstaining from contesting the elections as I aim to avoid potential discord that may arise post-election.”

Expressing his criticism towards mainstream political entities, the senior leader lamented that these major parties have only exacerbated the hardships faced by the populace.

He emphasized that political parties’ fundamental obligation is to chart a path forward, but lamented their lack of concerted efforts in this regard.
