PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially decided to increase fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service due to its growing financial losses.
According to a notification issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority, the new fares will be effective from July 1, 2025.
As per official documents, the fare per stop will increase by Rs10. Passengers traveling up to 5 kilometers will now pay Rs30, instead of the previous Rs20. For longer trips up to 40 kilometers, the fare will rise from Rs60 to Rs70. The price of a single-ride ticket is also being raised from Rs60 to Rs70.
This decision was taken during a recent meeting of the Board of Governors of TransPeshawar, where the ongoing financial crisis of the BRT system was discussed in detail.
Documents reveal that the government had provided a subsidy of Rs4 billion to BRT last year, but the deficit still remained high.

Transport department officials said that in the current inflationary environment, a Rs10 increase in fares is not a heavy burden. They added that the purpose of the fare hike is to move the BRT project towards financial self-sufficiency.
According to the notification, with a daily ridership of around 600,000 passengers, TransPeshawar expects to generate Rs6 million (60 lakh) in daily revenue after the fare revision. This will help improve the financial health of the BRT system.
