Water emergency: Mangla Dam reaches dead level, release halted

ISLAMABAD: Due to less rain this season, people in different parts of the country are facing a shortage of water. Now, the water level in Mangla Dam has also reached the dead level.

According to media reports, WAPDA officials said that the water level in Mangla Dam has dropped to 1,050 feet, and water release has been stopped.

A spokesperson said that Tarbela Dam is only 3 feet above the dead level and might reach it in the next 36 hours.

The WAPDA spokesperson stated that the water level in Tarbela Dam has fallen to 1,402 feet. The water storage in Tarbela is 15,000 acre-feet, in Mangla it is 72,000 acre-feet, and in Chashma it is 15,000 acre-feet.

According to the spokesperson, the total water storage in Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma is 102,000 acre-feet.

The spokesperson added that at Tarbela, the inflow of water in the Indus River is 22,200 cusecs and the outflow is 20,000 cusecs. At Mangla, the inflow in the Jhelum River is 19,900 cusecs and the outflow is 28,000 cusecs. At Chashma Barrage, the inflow is 38,400 cusecs and the outflow is 27,000 cusecs.

The spokesperson also said that at Head Marala in the Chenab River, the inflow is 10,800 cusecs and the outflow is 6,100 cusecs. At Nowshera in the Kabul River, the inflow is 14,300 cusecs and the outflow is also 14,300 cusecs.

It should be noted that a few days ago, a warning was issued that the water storage in Mangla Dam and Tarbela Dam was running out.

This season, there has been very little rain in the country. However, in February and March, there was rain and snowfall in the northern areas.
