Punjab announces crackdown on single-use plastics starting Dec 10

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that its crackdown against single-use plastic will begin on December 10. The EPA issued a notification regarding amendments to the single-use plastic laws.

Starting from December 10, strict action will be taken against the use, manufacture, purchase, and sale of single-use plastic.

Violators will face fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000. In case of a violation, the premises will be sealed, and the material will be confiscated.

The notification imposes a complete ban on the purchase and sale of plastic shopping bags that are less than 75 microns in thickness.

Public has been given time until December 9 to eliminate plastic. After this date, action will be taken against any violations.

EPA has formed plastic management committees in each district and has directed them to make media campaigns and public awareness efforts more effective.

Meetings have also been ordered with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and District Police Officers (DPOs) for the effective implementation of the crackdown.

On the other hand, the Sindh Police has decided to establish a databank to collect records of stolen and missing vehicles, as well as the accused.

A statement issued by the Sindh Police spokesperson said that a review meeting was held under the chairmanship of the IG Sindh regarding stolen, missing, and snatched vehicles. During the meeting, it was also decided to take action against scrap dealers involved in buying and selling stolen goods.
