ISLAMABAD: Under an accord struck between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), on Friday, Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, a prominent figure within PML-N, was appointed as the governor of Balochistan.
In an interview with a private television channel, Mandokhail, who serves as the president of PML-N’s provincial chapter, expressed gratitude to Nawaz Sharif, the leader of PML-N, for selecting him for this esteemed position.
“I am committed to serving both the nation and the country in my capacity as governor, acting as a conduit between the province and the federal government,” stated the PML-N representative.
Mandokhail will take over from Abdul Wali Kakar, a member of the Balochistan National Party (BNP), who has held the governorship since March 2023.
Previously, PPP had nominated two of its loyalists for the positions of governors in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Following the February 8 elections, PML-N and PPP formed a coalition government at the national level, with PPP supporting PML-N in government formation, given neither party secured a simple majority in the lower house.
After extensive negotiations between the two parties, it was agreed that PPP would secure various constitutional positions, including the governorships of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as the presidency, Senate chairmanship, and National Assembly deputy speakership.
As per the agreement, the coalition government in Balochistan is shared, with PPP holding the chief minister’s post and PML-N being allocated the governorship.
