LAHORE: Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb says that due to smog, government and private primary schools in Lahore are being closed for a week.
“A notification is being issued to close government and private schools for a week,” the minister said.
Health and Safety Measures:
She said that special attention should be paid to the health of children in primary schools. Masks must be mandatory in government and private schools.
Marriyum Aurangzeb said that air pollution has increased in India due to the burning of crop residues and smoke.
“The smog situation in Lahore has become more complicated. Due to strong winds coming from India, Lahore has come to the first place in the air pollution index.”
Ongoing Government Efforts:
She said that the Punjab government has been working to combat smog since day one. For the first time, work has been underway for eight months to deal with smog. The “war room” established in the Environmental Protection Agency is working on a 24-hour war footing.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said regarding the measures to combat smog that a complete ban has been imposed on fireworks, a complete ban on construction, and a one-kilometer area within the green lockdown area.
She added that “Green lockdown will have to be imposed in two more areas of Lahore; an announcement will be made soon in this regard.”
Call to Farmers
The senior provincial minister said that farmers are requested not to burn crop residues and to use superseeders. “Farmers were arrested today and will be tomorrow too; unless they take responsibility themselves, smog cannot be controlled.”
Marriyum Aurangzeb said that “the smog problem cannot be solved without talking to India; the matter can only be solved with measures from both sides of the borders.”
