Wholesale grocers announce grain market shutdown nationwide from July 31

KARACHI: The Wholesale Grocers Association has announced the closure of grain markets across the country from July 31, 2024.

Along with other classes, traders are also angry with the government against rising inflation, unnecessary taxes, and measures against the business class in the budget. In this regard, Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association has announced that grain markets across the country will be closed from tomorrow.

According to Chairman Association Rauf Ibrahim, grain markets across Pakistan are going to be closed from Wednesday.

In the first phase of the protest, there will be a strike from July 31 to August 2, during which grain markets across the country, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Quetta, Peshawar, and Mardan, will stop supply from tomorrow.

He said that the current tax in the budget will increase the price of each pulse by 10%, and as a result, the price of pulses will increase from Rs. 20 to Rs. 50.

The implementation of withholding tax will directly affect the common consumers. Consumers’ monthly grocery costs will increase significantly.

Eighty percent of pulses are imported for local consumption. The annual consumption of pulses in the country is 15 lakh tonnes.

In the second phase of the protest, the strike will be for an indefinite period. It will be announced on August 6. He said that we are presenting our charter of demand to the government. Apart from the shops, the offices of Dals will also remain closed from Wednesday.
