ISLAMABAD: With the general elections nearly two weeks away, a police officer was martyred on Thursday in an armed assault on the regional office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in Turbat, Balochistan.
As per the police, an exchange of gunfire occurred when unidentified armed individuals tried to enter the ECP office of the regional election commissioner in Turbat.
In the encounter, a police personnel named Namrooz sacrificed his life in the line of duty, thwarting the militants’ scheme.
Following their unsuccessful attempt to enter the ECP office, the armed individuals threw a hand grenade into the office. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the explosion. Meanwhile, the unidentified attackers managed to escape from the scene unimpeded.
Upon receiving information, the police and law enforcement agencies swiftly reached the location and initiated investigations.
The incident occurred a day after the caretaker Chief Minister of Balochistan, Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki, visited Turbat city to assess the measures taken for ensuring a transparent conduct of the general election in the region.
During the visit, Domki emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the security of candidates participating in the elections and maintaining law and order to facilitate a peaceful electoral process in the province.
He further mentioned that the caretaker administration had intensified efforts to uphold law and order during the electoral process, formulating an effective strategy for restoring peace in the province.
Earlier in the week, election offices of PPP-P candidates in Mastung and Kharan were targeted in hand grenade attacks.
