LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz asserted on Tuesday that a swift resolution to the prolonged issue of high inflation faced by the impoverished citizens of Pakistan lies in casting votes promptly in favor of the party’s symbol, the lion.

Maryam presented this “innovative solution” during a corner meeting in the PP-159 constituency of Lahore, where she had initiated her party’s election campaign a day earlier.

According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the country’s consumer price index (CPI) in December 2023 surged by 29.7% compared to the previous year.

In 2023, approximately 241 million people experienced unprecedented inflation, and the national currency reached historic lows until a $3 billion International Monetary Fund bailout package prevented a looming sovereign default in July of the preceding year.

Maryam Nawaz reminisced about the “development, infrastructure, and mass transit projects” undertaken by former PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif. Highlighting her party’s record of “service” in Lahore, she encouraged the electorate to vote for the PML-N on February 8.

Taking aim at the Imran Khan-founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Maryam criticized the PTI for allegedly abandoning Lahore and urged voters to oust the “intruders” from the city on election day.

She pledged that the PML-N would transform the fate of Lahore, Punjab, and Pakistan if entrusted with power.

Addressing another gathering at a reception camp in Lahore’s Nishtar Colony, Maryam sought support for the PML-N in the upcoming polls, expressing her desire for Nawaz Sharif to return to power for another term.

She requested permission to contest the election from PP-159 and promised to lay the foundation for a modern Nishtar Colony, emphasizing her party’s commitment to reviving development that, according to her, had been stagnant over the past five years.
