Samsung’s latest premium smartphones, revealed on Wednesday, will feature multiple AI capabilities, including simultaneous translation of foreign language phone calls, marking the company’s latest move to compete with Apple.

According to data from International Data Corporation, Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments in 2023, ending Samsung’s reign since 2010. The surge in demand for premium devices, a segment dominated by Apple, has outpaced overall market growth.

In response, Samsung is incorporating various artificial intelligence features into its premium Galaxy S24 models as part of its strategy to appeal to buyers.

The new phones will introduce real-time two-way voice translation for live phone calls conducted in two different languages, making the Galaxy S24 series the first smartphone ever to offer this capability, according to the company.

Powered by Samsung’s own generative AI training, the on-device AI function supports 13 different languages. Additional features include a “circle-to-search” function that allows users to search any part of an image on screen in Google.

The phones also offer AI translation, message tone customization (casual, formal, business, or social media), AI summaries and translation of voice recordings, “generative editing” of photos to fill in non-existent backgrounds, and a feature that turns real-time videos into slow-motion using AI to fill in missing frames.

On-device AI refers to generative AI functions that are downloaded to each user’s device after being trained, eliminating the need to connect to the cloud. Companies like Qualcomm and Samsung emphasize the security of on-device AI for personal information, as it does not require sending data to the cloud for processing.

While only 5% of smartphones shipped in 2024 are predicted to be AI-capable, Canalys forecasts a significant increase to 45% in 2027.

In the long run, “generative AI on devices is expected to have a substantial impact on the smartphone market, particularly in terms of user experience,” stated Jene Park, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint.

However, Park noted that the immediate impact on smartphone purchases may be limited, as it takes time for generative AI functions to incorporate more data and improve value for consumers.

The Galaxy S24 series is set to go on sale starting January 31, with the base Galaxy S24 priced from $799 in the United States.

The higher-specification versions, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, will be available for $999 and $1,299, respectively. Samsung has maintained the prices of the base model and Plus at the same level as last year, while the Ultra’s price has been increased by $100.
