ISLAMABAD: Following President Dr Arif Alvi’s remarks regarding the signing of two crucial bills, three prominent political entities – the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), and the Awami National Party (ANP) – have jointly called for his resignation.

The PPP’s spokesperson, Faisal Karim Kundi, expressed regret over the incident, highlighting the delay in President Alvi’s apology, which came a full day after media reports indicated his endorsement of the bills. Kundi voiced concerns about Alvi’s suitability for the presidential position, suggesting a lack of awareness regarding ongoing matters and those around him.

Sherry Rehman, Vice President of PPP, released a statement raising doubts about Alvi’s capability to effectively fulfill his presidential duties. She questioned whether Alvi’s statement implied that someone else had signed the bills without his knowledge, and recommended his resignation if that was the case.

Senator Mian Raza Rabbani emphasized the need for potential action against President Arif Alvi under the framework of the Constitution and applicable laws if any misrepresentation of facts was confirmed. Rabbani noted that Alvi’s tweeted revelations had generated more inquiries into the factual aspects rather than legal considerations. He proposed an inquiry by a committee comprised of all Senate members to scrutinize the facts, asserting that both President Alvi and his relevant staff should appear before the Senate.

PPP’s Secretary General Nayyer Hussain Bokhari went further by suggesting a medical assessment of President Alvi, as he believed that Alvi’s tweet raised questions about his mental state.

Former finance minister and PMLN Senator Ishaq Dar expressed incredulity at Dr Arif Alvi’s statement, publicly demanding his resignation on the social media platform X.

Meanwhile, ANP Provincial President Aimal Wali Khan criticized President Dr Arif Alvi for making a statement he deemed irresponsible, thereby tarnishing the reputation of both Alvi’s own persona and the esteemed office he held. Khan questioned Alvi’s ability to manage his own staff, pondering why Alvi would retain his position if he lacked control over his team. Khan advised President Alvi to step down with dignity rather than allowing himself to be used as a political tool.
