PM Shehbaz directs 50% of public sector cargo to use Gwadar port

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that 50 percent of the country’s public sector sea route cargo be routed through Gwadar port.

PM Shehbaz issued this directive while chairing a review meeting on Chinese investment in Pakistan, where a detailed briefing was provided on the visit of the Chinese experts’ delegation to Pakistan.

A group of Chinese experts visited Pakistan from July 30, 2024, to August 6, 2024. They met with officials from different government departments and gave ideas on how to improve cooperation in various areas.

Meeting was informed that during the delegation’s visit, significant progress was achieved in cooperation and investment in trade and investment, energy, agriculture, information technology, communication, and infrastructure sectors between China and Pakistan.

The Chinese delegation also met with the major Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the country.

The meeting was informed that Chinese experts will be hired to boost domestic exports and remove non-trade barriers. Sectoral roadshows will be organized in various cities in China to promote Pakistani products.

Technology transfer and upgrading services from China in electric vehicles, electro-medical devices, and other sectors will be acquired.

The meeting also heard that more Chinese companies are interested in moving their businesses to Pakistan. Additionally, a Chinese company that makes auto spare parts has recently made good progress in setting up its own factory in Pakistan.

PM directed that all provinces be given an equal ratio for the training of Pakistani students and research scholars in agriculture in China and instructed the formation of a committee, chaired by Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, to oversee the transparent selection of Pakistani students and research scholars for this training.

The meeting was informed about facilitating land leasing for Special Economic Zones. It was also mentioned that Pakistani students and research scholars will receive training in agriculture in China, with 572 applications already received.
