Renowned Jurist SM Zafar Passes Away at Age 93

LAHORE: Renowned Pakistani legal expert and former Senator, Syed Muhammad Zafar, affectionately known as SM Zafar, passed away at the age of 93, as confirmed by his family members in Lahore on Thursday. The family disclosed that he had been battling illness for an extended period.

SM Zafar, recognized as a leading Pakistani human rights advocate and esteemed lawyer, also held the position of federal minister of Law and Justice from 1965 to 1969. He was the father of Barrister Ali Zafar, a prominent figure in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

Born in Burma on December 6, 1930, this veteran jurist embarked on his legal career in the 1950s after graduating from University Law College. Following his government service, which concluded in 1968, he established his own law practice and retired from active legal practice in 2014.

SM Zafar’s notable legal achievements encompassed securing the acquittal of Pakistani Scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, involvement in the formulation and drafting of the 1973 Constitution, and contributions to the drafting of the 18th constitutional amendment. In addition to being honored with the Nishan e Imtiaz in 2012, he received numerous other awards and accolades in recognition of his dedicated service to the nation.
