ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal paid a surprise visit to the under-construction 200-bed emergency block at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad. The new facility is almost complete and will soon be inaugurated.
Calling it a major step in improving emergency healthcare in Islamabad, Ahsan Iqbal said the new emergency tower will be able to treat up to 10,000 patients daily, according to a press release.
He said the state-of-the-art tower would set a new standard in federal healthcare, offering advanced facilities like triage systems, trauma care units, surgical theaters, diagnostic services, and intensive care units — all under one roof.
The Project In-Charge informed the minister that all types of emergency cases will be handled in this single facility. The triage system will help prioritize treatment based on the severity of a patient’s condition and available resources.
During his visit, Ahsan Iqbal said the government is fully committed to improving public health infrastructure, and the new block is part of long-term investment in critical healthcare services. He added that as the largest tertiary care hospital in the capital, PIMS will benefit greatly from this expansion and help reduce the pressure on existing emergency rooms.
“This facility shows our priority towards healthcare, especially in terms of accessibility and quality,” said the minister. He added that his surprise visit was to personally check the progress and ensure the project is completed on time.

Previously, PIMS launched a helpline service for patients on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The service is aimed at addressing patient complaints quickly.
Dr. Mubashir Mushtaq Daha, spokesperson for the Executive Director of PIMS, said that patients can now call 051-9071711 to report any issues related to their treatment.
He said PIMS, being Islamabad’s largest hospital, receives thousands of patients daily in its OPD and emergency departments. To make things easier for patients and their families, signboards have also been installed across the hospital with relevant information.
Dr. Daha added that the availability of senior doctors 24/7 has been ensured and that basic medicines are being provided free of cost to thousands of patients every day. He also praised Dr. Imran Sikandar, the Executive Director of PIMS, for ensuring quick response to complaints through the new helpline.
Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Barth, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health, has also taken several key initiatives to improve healthcare services in the capital.
