Extreme hot weather in South Korea has claimed the lives of 16 people, according to reports from foreign media. The country has been experiencing a prolonged heat wave, with temperatures reaching as high as 38 degrees Celsius in various regions.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency confirmed that the death toll from the heat has reached 16 individuals. This marks a significant increase compared to last year when six people lost their lives due to the extreme temperatures. Additionally, 1284 people have been reported as being affected by the scorching heat.

In response to the severity of the heat wave, South Korea’s Ministry of Interior and Security issued a “severe” heat wave warning for the first time since 2019.

Recently, Yooju city in Gyeonggi province recorded the highest temperature at 38.4 degrees Celsius, while Anseong city experienced a temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius.

To mitigate the impact of the heat on the population, authorities are taking measures such as providing tents and umbrellas for rent to offer some relief.

It is essential to note that the increasing temperatures are a part of a broader trend of climate change, affecting countries worldwide, leading to more frequent and intense heat waves.
