Eid-ul-Adha 2025: Over 1.1m animals sold in Punjab cattle markets

LAHORE: More than 1.1 million animals were sold in 292 cattle markets set up across Punjab for Eid ul Azha 2025. According to the Punjab Local Government Department, about 1.5 million animals were brought to these markets.

A private TV channel reported that Punjab, the largest province in the country, had 292 markets where people came to buy animals for sacrifice. Out of 1.5 million animals brought to the markets, over 1.1 million were sold.

In Lahore alone, 443,000 small animals and 222,000 large animals were sold. In Faisalabad, 112,000 animals were brought to the markets and 88,000 were sold. In Rawalpindi, 84,000 animals arrived, and 46,000 were sold.

The Local Government Secretary said that good facilities were provided to people on a “no profit, no loss” basis.

Meanwhile, it is expected that around 7 million animal hides will be collected across the country this Eid.

According to a statement from the Pakistan Tanners Association, the total value of these hides is estimated at Rs 6.35 billion. Around 3 million cow, bull, and calf hides, 1,700 buffalo hides, and 3.465 million goat hides are expected to be collected. Around 400,000 sheep and 100,000 camel hides may also be gathered.

The average price of cow hides is expected to be Rs 1,575 and buffalo hides at Rs 1,680. Tanners will buy goat hides for Rs 450 and camel hides for Rs 580.

Another report from the Tanners Association said that animal sales have increased this year. However, animal prices went up by 20 to 30 percent, while hide prices have dropped. Due to high animal prices, more people took part in collective sacrifices this year.

Last year, 6.1 million animals were sold during Eid. This year, the number is estimated to be 6.977 million.  It is also estimated that 3 million cows and bulls, and 3.45 million goats were sacrificed during the three days of Eid.

Around 400,000 sheep, 103,000 camels, and 400,000 buffaloes were also sacrificed. This year, the price of cow hides is Rs 1,575 and goat hides are Rs 446. Last year, cow hides sold for Rs 1,800 and goat hides for Rs 450.
