KARACHI: Amid ongoing challenges for Pakistanis in accessing social media platform X, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has instructed the Ministry of Interior to withdraw its suspension letter within one week.
Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi criticized the ministry’s action during a hearing for petitions filed by Zarrar Khuhro, Jibran Nasir, and others. He questioned the effectiveness of the move and suggested it might make Pakistan look bad internationally.
The blocking of X, which millions of Pakistanis use, started in February supposedly because of concerns about national security. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) told the SHC that they blocked the site following orders from the Ministry of Interior and intelligence agencies.
The PTA explained that such orders to block mobile internet and social media come from the Ministry of Interior after looking at all the relevant reports and situations.
In another case, the interior ministry told the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that internet content is seen as a threat to national security.
