ISLAMABAD: Senior Supreme Court Judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa has been sworn in as the 29th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

President Arif Alvi administered the oath during a ceremony at the President’s House on Sunday.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa, born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta, is the son of the late Qazi Muhammad Isa of Pashin, a prominent leader in the movement for Pakistan’s establishment and a close associate of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He joined the Supreme Court as a judge on September 5, 2014. Despite being the most senior judge after a presidential reference in 2019, he had not participated in any constitutional cases for three years.

After his primary education in Quetta, Justice Qazi Faez Isa completed his A and O Levels at Karachi Grammar School in Karachi. He then pursued higher education in law in London, obtaining his Bar Professional Examination from the Inns of Court School of Law.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa started his legal career when he was appointed to the Balochistan High Court on January 30, 1985, and later became an Advocate Supreme Court in March 1998. During the state of emergency declared on November 3, 2007, he chose not to represent clients before judges who violated their oaths.

Following the Supreme Court’s nullification of the November 3 decision, the judges of the Balochistan High Court resigned, and on August 5, 2009, Justice Qazi Faez Isa was directly appointed as a judge of the Balochistan High Court.

Before his judicial career, Justice Qazi Faez Isa practiced law for 27 years, specializing in international arbitration. In recent times, he abstained from hearing cases for five months in protest against various issues within the Supreme Court, including the non-implementation of the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act and certain government legislations.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure as Chief Justice of Pakistan will be relatively short, as he is set to retire on October 25, 2024.
